Woman Arrested During Ridgewood BLM March, Protesters Demand Reparations, School System Reform
Ridgewood police arrested a young woman during a July 4th Black Lives Matter march through downtown that included a call for reparations and a sign that said "Cops are Pigs.” A few dozen or so members of a nascent group calling itself Ridgewood 4 Black Liberation began marching through downtown on the national holiday Saturday after a speaker accused the village of being “the greatest perpetrators and examples of America’s long and bloody history of suppressing black people’s right to existence." The marchers, many of them young women who were graduated from village schools, carried a bann…

'Selfish, Clownish': Mayor Slams Atlantic City Protest That Ended In 7 Arrests
Seven protestors including the event's organizer were arrested during a Black Lives Matter march through Atlantic City streets, which the city's mayor called "selfish and clownish" after futile attempts to postpone it. Mayor Marty Small Jr. met with organizer Steve Young earlier in the week to try to postpone the July Fourth march. Small, who watched the march, said he supports peaceful protests but that Young's -- which began at 1 p.m. July Fourth -- was "selfish" and "clownish." Starting at 1 p.m. outside of the city's public safety building, protestors chanted the names of those w…

According to reports, former New York City Mike Bloomberg’s $20 million Southampton mansion was near the epicenter of the protests. Reports said that the protesters are calling on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to hike taxes on New York's billionaires to make up for the chaos wreaked on the state’s budge…

Longtime Leonia Firefighter Resigns Over 'Indefensible' Post About Asian American Protester
A string of racist insults on Facebook against a young Asian-American protester has cost a volunteer of nearly 45 years his ranking positions with the Leonia Fire Department. It began with a post by a fellow firefighter of a photo taken during a protest in Leonia against the death of George Floyd. A young woman in the photo holds a sign that says “F(***) THE POLICE”. "To my Leonia people, who is this and how do you think this is peaceful?" a comment attached to the photo asked. A thread of nearly 300 comments followed -- many sharing the poster’s anger -- before the June 8 post was remove…

Life After Layoff: Matawan Man Uses Time Off To Photograph Historic Moments
A row of orange barriers was the only thing that separated Patrick O'Brien from a line of police officers at the Asbury Park rally for social injustice and police brutality. As protestors rallied around him, the moment seemed surreal to O'Brien. Nearly three months prior at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was laid off from his job. It was a position he'd held for five years. His future seemed uncertain -- everything seemed uncertain. But there he was -- at the rally. In the front row alongside the protestors. His camera in his hands, watching as a black officer in the line facing hi…
