New York Officially Raises Age To Buy Tobacco, E-Cigarettes From 18 to 21
Teenagers in New York will no longer be able to purchase tobacco or e-cigarette products. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the legislation into law on Tuesday, July 16 that raises the minimum sales age for tobacco and e-cigarette products from 18 to 21. "New York is taking aggressive action to stamp out smoking among teens and children, but tobacco and e-cigarette use still persists thanks to irresponsible corporate marketing campaigns targeting young people," Cuomo said. "By raising the smoking age from 18 to 21, we can stop cigarettes and e-cigarettes from getting into the h…

CT House Votes To Raise Smoking Age
Teenagers in Connecticut soon may no longer have legal access to tobacco and e-cigarette products. The Connecticut House overwhelmingly approved a bill 124-22 that will increase from 18 to 21 the minimum age to purchase such products. The bill now heads to the Senate. If approved, Connecticut will join eight other states in raising the age to purchase tobacco, though hundreds of municipalities throughout the country have taken steps to ban teenagers from purchasing cigarettes and e-cigarettes, including several Fairfield County. The bill imposes a $300 fine on a retailer who sells a tobac…

CT Getting Closer To Raising Age To Buy Tobacco
A proposal to ban the sale of tobacco and vaping products to anyone under the age of 21 in Connecticut is picking up steam statewide. Last month, elected officials proposed raising the age from 18 to 21 as lawmakers seek to limit the number of teenagers using e-cigarette and vaping delivery systems. Other proposals include increasing penalties to stores that sell to minors and increasing taxes on vaping products. The proposal to raise the legal purchasing age to 21 would also place a ban on flavored liquid, which health officials say will help drive teenagers away from potentially harmful …

Smoke Sale Age Raised To 21 In Bridgeport
Bridgeport has become the second city in Connecticut to pass legislation making it more difficult for children and teenagers to purchase tobacco products. The Bridgeport City Council passed a policy on Tuesday that raised the age of sale of tobacco products only to customers over the age of 21. The new ordinance comes on the heels of Hartford passing similar legislation late last year. Other communities in Connecticut are reportedly considering similar policies. The ban extends to the use of e-cigarettes and similar products. The vote passed 16-1. According to the organization “Tobacco Fre…

New Felony Gun Law Takes Effect In Connecticut
Several new laws took effect across Connecticut on Monday, Oct. 1. They include a ban on rapid-fire devices known as "bump stocks." Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy proposed making the semiautomatic gun "enhancements' illegal after the deadly Las Vegas mass shooting that killed 58 people and injured hundreds of others one year ago at a country music concert, as reported here by Daily Voice. A bump stock is a device that gives a gun the power to fire like an automatic weapon. Anyone caught with a bump stock in Connecticut, faces five years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine …

Juul Is Not Cool: Experts Battle The Cool Factor Of E-Cigarette Popular With Teens
Juul, a type of e-cigarette, holds appeal for teens thanks to fruity flavors and hip marketing. But Juul is far from harmless. One .7 mL Juul pod, which contains about 200 “puffs” of vapor, has the same amount of nicotine as one pack of cigarettes. Juul’s popularity is also linked to the fact that users can “ghost” its vapor — it doesn’t create a telltale cloud like other e-cigarettes. Ghosting allows vaping in the classroom because teachers can’t see it. And since e-cigs are disguised to look like pens, USB drives or asthma inhalers, they’re easy to hide in plain sight at home, school – you…

Schumer, Students Speak Out Against E-Cigs In Westchester
According to U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and teenagers who say they've become addicted to electronic cigarettes, Juul is no gem. Standing alongside New York kids who say they are now hooked on the e-cig, “Juul,” Schumer is demanding the feds, particularly the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), use a law on the books to immediately reign in and ban the kid-friendly e-cig flavors, that Schumer and others say are helping to fuel e-cig addiction among adolescents. The new and unprecedented e-cig warning letter to U.S. FDA Administrator Scott Gottlieb was signed last month by a broad coalition th…

CT Residents Under 21 May Be Banned From Buying Tobacco
State residents younger than 21 may be banned from buying tobacco, e-cigarettes or vapor products under a law being considered by the Connecticut General Assembly. The state has a near national average rate of high school smoking despite a well-below national average rate of adult smoking. The state imposes one of the highest taxes in the country, at $3.90 per pack. Given the average rate of high school smoking and the low rate of adult smoking, however, it appears Connecticut is not making progress in tobacco prevention. Currently, 1,500 children become daily smokers each year, and an es…
